Maheshwari vs Chanderi Sarees: A Buyer’s Guide from Indore’s Handloom Experts

Maheshwari vs Chanderi Sarees: A Buyer’s Guide from Indore’s Handloom Experts

Madhya Pradesh is home to two of India’s most beloved handwoven sarees — the Maheshwari and the Chanderi. Both are light, graceful and woven just a few hours from Indore, and both appear at almost every wedding, festival and family function in the region. They’re also the two sarees customers most often mix up.

If you’re deciding between them — for a wedding, a gift, or your own wardrobe — this guide breaks down exactly how they differ, how to spot a genuine handloom piece, and which weave suits which occasion. You can browse the full range of handloom sarees as you read.

What is a Maheshwari saree?

The Maheshwari saree comes from Maheshwar, a temple town on the banks of the Narmada, about 90 km from Indore. The weave was revived over 250 years ago under Rani Ahilyabai Holkar — and it still carries that royal restraint.

● Fabric: a light cotton–silk blend, so it drapes softly and breathes well.

● Signature: fine zari borders, a reversible border (finished on both sides), and pallus with distinctive stripes.

● Feel: lightweight, with a soft matte-to-gentle sheen — easy to carry all day.

● Best for: day weddings, festivals, office-to-evening wear and gifting.

What is a Chanderi saree?

The Chanderi saree is woven in Chanderi, also in Madhya Pradesh, and is famous for its sheer, glass-like transparency — often described as “woven air.”

● Fabric: silk, cotton, or the classic silk-cotton, with a glossy, translucent texture.

● Signature: a subtle shine, delicate gold or silver zari, and small butis (motifs) across the body.

● Feel: featherlight and airy, with a gentle shimmer that catches the light.

● Best for: summer and daytime events, reception looks, and anyone who likes a lighter, luminous drape.

How to tell a genuine handloom saree

Both weaves are widely copied on powerlooms and printed. A few quick checks:

● Look at the reverse — handloom motifs are neat on both sides; prints are not.

● Small irregularities in the weave are a good sign, not a flaw — they mean human hands.

● Check the selvedge and border finish — machine edges are suspiciously perfect.

● Genuine Chanderi and Maheshwari carry a GI (Geographical Indication) tag.

● Be wary of prices that seem too low for real handloom.

We buy directly from weavers and check every piece by hand — more on that on our About page.

So, which should you choose?

● Choose Maheshwari if you want a structured, all-day saree with crisp borders — great for traditional and festive looks.

● Choose Chanderi if you want a light, sheer, shimmering drape — great for summer, daytime and modern styling.

● On a budget / first handloom: a silk-cotton Chanderi or a cotton Maheshwari is a lovely, wearable start.

● For a wedding: pair either with heavier pieces, or explore our Banarasi sarees for a richer look.
